These photos were taken by the Maynards at the 40th wedding anniversary celebration of Janet and Wylie's wedding in Madras, India. Wendy writes:

As you can see none of us have changed over the years.oh yeah! Amazing to reconnect after 40 years. It seemed like 40 days.

There were almost 200 people at the celebration held at the Palo Alto Art Center, including Al and Janet Margolin, the PC doctors during our term. The party was complete with garlands, Ganesh, Indian music (live), henna-painting and a fantastic Indian buffet. The goat curry was delicious as was the mango lassi. After dinner we were treated to a wonderful performance of Bharata Natyam dance by a local student who explained all the gestures and movements very well. There was also a similar performance at Janet & Wylie's wedding In Madras in 1967.

After the party we returned to Janet & Wylie's house. There we reminisced thru Stan's and Janet and Wylie's slides and photos of their experiences in India and the Afghanistan of the late 60s and their training experience at Williams College.

I look forward to seeing these photos on the FOI gallery.

The longest trip we took while in India was from our village in Karnataka to Kashmir in May of 1971. We took a train from Mumbai through New Delhi up to Pathankot. From there it was a two day bus trip up to Srinagar. This was an extraordinary trip for us, and we are so grateful we saw that part of the world while we could. There were some tense moments as it was a volatile region then, though not as much as now.

We spent a few days in Srinagar in the government tourist bungalow there, then went on up into the Himalayas to Pahlgam at 10,000 ft above sea level. This small village is the starting point for a pilgrimage route to the Amarnath Cave, where Shiva retired. Again, we housed in a government tourist bungalow and were fed royally with thick hearty biriyanis and nan, yogurt and lots of seasoned rices. We spent about 5 days there, in clear cold clean quiet air. The pictures are a bit grainy but I hope clear enough.

A group of village girls who were dressing up and came to call at our front door around tea-time. Cookies and a picture-taking session were quite satisfying to all.Our village had a few weaving families, one was next door. They would set up their yarns to stretch and sort them, getting them ready for the loom which was in the house. Our Panchayat chairman was from a venerated warrior family and had his grandfatherOur Panchayat chairmanAbout 5-6 AM, right after my chergi of warm water buffalo milk was delivered. The picture is taken from our front door. Loved looking at those bullocks each morning...Tom braved the stares of the women to get this picture...it

Thank you, Jack --- these photos have been sitting in trunks and garages and attics for 30 + years, it is so nice to have them see the light of day this way.

A short series of pictures taken in Bableswar, just south of Bijapur, where Russ & Etha Stebbins were stationed. We spent a lot of time with them, playing games of Hearts that lasted for a full day. Coming into the village, we always passed this compound with two elderly people who always greeting us as we passed. One day they asked if I could take their picture with their granddaughter. I started taking the shots ---- the grandfather gave up pretty quickly, the grandmother eventually started laughing & waved us on.
